She is my university English conversation professor. I had never met and talked to any foreigner before I met her, so she was my first foreign acquaintance and first foreign teacher. Her name is Janice Catherine Armstrong. She is a Canadian and quite kind, and also has a bright smile. Her hobby is traveling to other countries, and she likes all kinds of movies. She has lived here for four years, and she has many friends who are of various ages, because her character is very comfortable to everybody. So she is very famous among our university students.
It was spring, last year, when I met her for the first time. During those days, I took her beginning English conversation class. She asked us to answer our classmates' questions. Of course, the questions were about greetings for the beginning class. Though the questions were easy to answer, I couldn't answer them well yet, because speaking in English was difficult for me.
She said kindly, "Don't be nervous. Nobody can speak English very well at first. If you will try to study English every day, you will speak better."
I appreciated her advice. After that, I was getting confident in my ability to study English. As time went on, when the midterm examination period came, we had to take the English conversation examination. Of course, we had to prepare by talking with a partner. My partner's nickname was Julia, who was an English major like me. She spoke English far better than me because she was a senior and tried to study English very hard. At last, we chose the topic and took the conversation examination. We talked about episodes when we were high school students. Though I was prepared for the examination, I failed to do well, because I was nervous about speaking.
My partner said to Ms. Armstrong, "I'm sorry, but he was a bit nervous."
And as soon as possible I said, "I was nervous, would you give us one more chance please?" We begged her pardon.
        "Sure." She permitted it.
Then, we took the conversation examination again and were satisfied with the result. Exactly speaking, we did our best owing to Ms. Armstrong's generosity.
Now, as a student in the Department of English Language and Literature at Daejin University, I try to study English every day. After that, I have often met and had dinner together with Ms. Armstrong. We usually have samgyupsal and beer, so we always have a great time. In addition, I often drop by her office, greet her, and write and receive e-mail from her. Also, I'm taking her intermediate class this semester. Finally, I always appreciate the fact that she gave me help to study English, and I always admire her for her generosity.
