By Seo Ji-heun ("Catherine")
En-sil is my best friend. I met her in middle school. We've been close
for eight years. She knows about me very well, because we have done everything
together--through sad times and happy times. So she is my good adviser
and supporter. She often writes letters to me. I have received five hundred
letters from her till now. These letters contain our memories from a long
time ago. I'm very happy when I read them.
She has a warm heart, and she always gives comfort and faith to me. I often
learned a friend's value through her. Three years ago, we took an entrance
examination for university. But I had an unbelievable result. I had a worse
score than I expected. I didn't know what to do. I felt that my future
would be very dark. She consoled me and stayed close to me. She often visited
my home because I almost never went out. One day, she visited me when I
stayed all day in my room.
"I don't know what to do. I feel like I'm standing on a dark street," I
told her.
"I understand, but you shouldn't just sit here," she answered.
"I don't have any hope."
"Ji-heun! We need to have a positive view when we see the world, and we
are still young. I believe in you."
At that time, these words were familiar to my ears. I didn't want to apply
to any university. But she persuaded me. I applied due to her persuasion.
I lacked assurance. But I passed the entrance examinations to two universities
fortunately. She rejoiced over the news of my passing the examinations.
"Congratulations! I knew that you could do it!"
"En-sil...Thank you," I said with a quivering voice.
I chose Daejin University because I like English literature. I will graduate
from this university after a year. If En-sil didn't encourage me, I would
regret my behavior. I'm thankful to her. She is an earnest friend.
In addition, I met my boyfriend through En-sil. I'm indebted to her for
my love. She arranged a blind date for me a year ago, and the man I met
then became my boyfriend. At first I didn't want to go on the blind date
because I had broken up with another boyfriend a few days before. I remembered
that
that time was arduous to me. But I went on the blind date after all, because
she continued to persuade me. The blind date took place at a coffee shop
early last winter.
"This is my classmate, Jun-suk. And this is my best friend, Ji-heun,Ħħ
En-sil said with a smile.
"Glad to meet you. I heard many times about you," Jun-suk said shyly.
"Really? I heard many times about you too," I said with a smile.
We were laughing all at once. The man I met was shy and gentle. He didn't
correspond to my ideal style, but I had a good impression of him, so I
met him several times, and he became my boyfriend after all. We spent happy
times together for a long time. We fell in love with each other, but we
suffered pain because he had to go to the army in June. When he went to
the army, I was very sad. En-sil consoled me.
"I understand your feelings because I went through the same thing. You
will get better as time goes on. Ji-heun... Cheer up!"
"Thank you...."
"No... If I hadn't introduced him to you, you wouldn't need to undergo
this pain."
"No, no... You gave us a valuable opportunity. We're always thankful to
you. I think that I need to pay a price to be happy."
"When I saw him, I thought that he seemed match you. So I looked at him
for a long time. I felt that he was a good guy, so I introduced him to
you, because you are my valuable friend."
"En-sil...Thank you very much... You are a good friend."
En-sil gave us a valuable opportunity and a valuable present. En-sil was
a young girl with bobbed-haired when I met her at first, but she has changed
her appearance as time passed. She is a mature woman with long hair and
a beautiful face now. Though she has changed her appearance, our friendship
is unchanged. We believe that our friendship will be forever, because we
trust and love each other.
