Everyone knows
that smoking is very harmful to people's health. It causes a lot of diseases
such as cancer of the lungs, throat, and mouth, premature birth, sterility
and early menopause. But many people still like to smoke cigarettes. Recently,
the rate of women's smoking has rapidly increased. However, the old and
young men in Korea don't like women's smoking. At this point, I want to
find the reason why women smoke, why women shouldn't smoke, and why people
don't like women's smoking.
There are a
lot of harmful elements to people's health in cigarettes. Nicotine and
tar are the most dangerous substances. Cigarettes are considered a drug
because nicotine is highly addictive. It makes it hard for smokers to
stop smoking. Tar is a highly cancerous substance. Both can cause diseases.
The harmful substances in cigarettes can reduce a person's lifespan by
causing many diseases and damaging a person's organs. Dr Park Chang Sun,of
Jun-Buk Hospital, says that if someone smokes cigarettes, he or she is
killing himself or herself by inhaling.
Smoking is
more harmful to women than to men. Nicotine accumulates more easily in
a woman's body than in a man's body. It accelerates the growth of potential
sickness and attacks and damages people's weak organs. Especially, women's
smoking can cause a premature birth, and deformed children during pregnancy.
Above all,
it is true that smoking is harmful to people's health but most men in Korea
like to smoke cigarettes and dislike women's smoking. They suggest that
it breaks established conventions because women's smoking has been taboo
in respectable families since the Cho-sun Period. In those days, respectable
people thought only men and kisaeng, women who worked in bars during Cho-sun
Period, could smoke cigarettes. Also, Korean men say that women's smoking
directly influences their babies, causing such things as slow growth and
deformed babies, so they can't approve of it.
Whenever someone
wants to smoke cigarettes, he or she is free to do so, of course. When
women are smoking cigarettes, they can feel comfortable and calm. Father's
smoking also indirectly influences their children's health by second-hand
smoke, and it is more harmful to people's health than direct smoke, but
they usually go out of the room for smoking in order to protect their babies'
health. However, a mother's smoking directly influences her baby's health
from the beginning.
Although I
would like to see all women stop smoking cigarettes completely, I suggest
that women smoker must at least temporarily stop their smoking for her
baby's growth, from one year before their babies' birth until their children
enter elementary school.
