Where Are Politicians Going?

By Cho Seung-Pyo ("Joseph")

Every day the most urgent issues in the air are about the economy and politics. Furthermore, there is a lot of criticism of politicians who don't try to escape from the hard economic situation. These stories add more and more distrust among the people who eagerly do their best in our terrible situation. The ruling party's president. Kim Dae Jung, says that the worst of our economic problems are over, but none of our citizens believe his comments due to the present politicians' behavior.
A few days ago, I watched a TV program. There was research study on what is the most popular job. The first was public servant; the second was teacher. However, politician was last in line because the political state has become disorderly. In addition, citizens never have a good opinions of them anymore, because they have struggled to get only their own political advantage.
Lawmakers are the people who are elected to represent the citizens; in other words, they must do their best for us. However, the present politicians have no idea what real service for citizens is. They seem to have no consideration for the opinions of citizens. The present situation is the worst ever. Every citizens wished to have a new economic and political revolution after Kim Dae Jung became the president, but the quarrel between the ruling and opposition parties is not finished yet.
A few months ago, one article in a newspaper made me so angry. In the National Assembly, a lot of bills were delayed, while lawmaker's quarreling was going on at that time. Unexpectedly, only one bill was passed without even a little controversy. That bill provided for their pay raise. Many citizens were uncomfortable because of the delayed bills, but govern lment officials ignored them. I guess that foreigners who see our assembly men couldn't help laughing at them. I sincerely question whether politicians know whatare the crucial things in Korea or not.
These days, I've been hearing a new satirical word. If someone calls you "political," it means you are selfish, dishonest and nasty. What a shameful thing! Our politicians should change quickly. The coming days are important to us. But the lawmakers have to make all of the decisions through peaceful negotiation rather than quarreling. The government says, "Let's achieve the 'second Nation-Building' with sympathy and compromise." Therefore, the political corruption must be stopped immediately, and moreover, all of the politicians must do their best for citizens above all else.
