Food Support for North Korea

By Oh Ju-Mun ("Joel")

Nowadays, many TV programs dealing with Norh Korean's starvation are very popular. A few days ago, I was watching TV and was surprised by the actual conditions there. For example, an 18-year-old boy I saw was only 130 centimeters tall, and he had a skin disease owing to the miserable conditions. Furthermore, in a North Korean border area adjacent to China, around the Ap-Rok River, many people who escaped from North Korea are keeping body and soul together by theft. So, the people around river always feel apprehension, but no one knows when a theft will occur.
I think we have to help our brothers and sisters in the North with food support for several reasons. First of all, we are human, so we can say that food support is needed simply as an expression of love for humanity. For example, when the problem of starvation in Somalia was rising for the first time, we were also surprised and felt sympathy for them. So, the majority of us felt love for humanity and gave aid to them.
Next, we all are the same race. Regardless of their lack of political recognition, this support will be a help to bring about unification and after unification. Since they will feel that we are all one because of our protection, it will help to bring emotional reconciliation when we all come to be one--when unification comes true.
Last, food support can reduce our expenses after unification. After all, we can shorten the distance of our economic differences. When two countries which have different economic levels become one, they generally have to possess similar levels with each other. In the case of Germany's unification, both countries had balanced economies. For example, West Germans passed garbage over the Berlin Wall to East Germany on purpose. This garbage included useful necessities, and then the East Germans, who lived under poor economic circumstances, could use it again. By using the necessities, they came to meditate the circumatances that they confronted. In other words, they came to know their opponent's economic position and change their thoughts about unification. West Germans allowed East Germans to know that Weat Germany's economy was enough to do it. This event shows that it is possible to bring emotional reconciliation.
In order to balance the economies, we have to keep North Koreans from devastation of their land and bankruptcy of their industrial institutions. The situation of North Korea is enough to say that it is miserable. I think that the aid should come from the South Korean government. Apart from our thoughts about the international relationship between South Korea and North Korea, the government should make reliable institutions. If we don't take measures now, the people in North Korea will die of hunger.
