In our society,
men and women are judged by different standards. The standards are clear.
A woman is judged by the standard of "beauty," and a man is judged by the
standard of "power." Though a woman is intelligent, talented, and good,
but is not beautiful, she is not highly thought of by men. Also, a man
without power is not highly judged by women. I think the standards of "beauty"
for a woman and "power" for a man are deep-rooted prejudices of people.
I am against these prejudices.
What kind of
woman is beautiful? I think a beautiful woman is a beautiful person on
the inside and on the outside. Generally, people think a beautiful woman
is a woman who has a pretty and beautiful appearance, but they don't think
a beautiful woman is a woman who has a beautiful mind, namely, a wise and
honest woman. Most women make an effort to follow these standards of "beauty."
Women invest a lot of time and money in becoming more beautiful. Women
put on make up every morning, go on diets, and buy new clothes for every
season. Regardless of sex, it's natural that everybody wants to look good.
But in the case of women, it's often considered an obligation for women
to make an effort to be more beautiful. For instance, I remember a teacher's
words when I was in high school. He used to joke, "Women don't have to
study, but just have to be beautiful." I once saw a movie, and though I
don't remember the movie's name, it was a story about a man who was torn
between a beautiful woman and a smart woman. The man chose the smart woman
in the movie, but in our real life, most men may choose a beautiful woman.
In the case
of men, what is power? I think it is as follows. A woman is judged by how
she looks, but a man is judged by what he is and what he does. Namely,
for men, power means money, authority including ability, or physical power.
Most men make an effort to have this power as women make an effort to become
more beautiful. It's a commonly accepted idea that a weak and beautiful
woman should be protected by a strong and powerful man. When a man has
power, he can take responsibility for a weak woman. This is a heavy obligation
to him. Nowadays, most women support that women should have the same rights
and opportunities as men. But a lot of women want to be treated specially
by men, because they are weak women. For instance, my brother often tells
me when he dates girls, most of them think it is natural that he should
pay all expenses of dating, because my brother is a man, and this idea
of women makes him angry.
In my opinion,
a man and a woman are different physically, but should be treated equally.
By the way, why are a man and a woman judged with different standards?
In our agricultural society, men needed power when they worked because
they had the responsibility for supporting their families. Women who were
physically weaker than men could not help depending on men, because most
work needed physical strength. But now the situation is changed. Apart
from physical power, women can display their equal power with men. I think
all people should be judged by their ability regardless of sex. In addition,
these standards of "beauty" for a woman and "power" for a man aggravate
sexual discrimination. I can say these standards are a kind of prejudice.
Because the prejudice has been rooted deeply for a long time, it's difficult
or impossible to root it out immediately. Also, I know the prejudice about
"beauty" and "power" dominates our thinking, and it's wrong, but most people
say we can't help accepting the prejudice. But we should recognize these
standards are wrong. Finally, I think the prejudice that dominates us will
disappear gradually.
