Early Studying Abroad

By Kwak Mi Suk ("Ell")

A lot of Korean students have gone abroad to study since the 1990s. There are students who go abroad to enter a university or graduate school, but there are also many students who go abroad to study before graduating from high school, middle school, or elementary school. I'd like to talk about early studying abroad.
There are some advantages of early studying abroad. If young students study abroad, they can learn foreign languages earlier and easier than students studying in Korea. Also they can experience other countries' culture, so they can reduce problems caused by not knowing about foreigners. Furthermore, students can find a talent that is not shown in Korea, because students can learn various things in a better educational environment. But there are some disadvantage,
Above all, when young children go abroad to study, they can lose sight of what their purpose is. If a child's family doesn't emigrate, but he or she lives alone in a foreign country, the child will feel lonely, and may not adjust to a suddenly changed and free environment. Also if we look at young students studying abroad, a lot of them are students who escape from Korea because they are bad students in Korea. These students often give themselves up more to drinking, drugs, or gambling than studying. We can hear about these facts through TV, magazines, or newspapers. I think that smart children with strong self-confidence can go abroad to study. But it's not easy for most children.
Also, early studying abroad has some problems for economic reasons. It has been a fashion since the 1990s. A student needs a lot of money to go abroad to study. It means our money is going abroad. Early studying abroad is partly responsibility for causing the IMF situation. Furthermore, a lot of homes have difficulty because of early studying abroad. For example, my uncle, who was rich, has two sons and a daughter who go to middle and high school. One day, his son told him he didn't want to go to school; instead, he wanted to go abroad to study. Finally, both of his sons and his daughter went abroad. His first son went to Austria to study vocal music, and his other son and daughter went to a university in the U.S. Now they are still there. My uncle didn't allow them at first because he thought they were too young to live without parents. But my aunt who was a teacher thought that studying abroad would be better than studying in Korea. So my aunt persuaded my uncle to allow his sons and his daughter to go abroad. He was rich, but it was difficult because of the high educational and living expenses. So my uncle is now in debt and lives with difficulty.
In conclusion, early studying abroad has a lot of problems. It has some advantages in that children might get a better education. On the other hand, I think it's difficult for the children to study hard in a suddenly changed environment. In a lot of cases, it's dangerous for children to study abroad, because children need their parents' love, but if children go abroad alone, they feel lonely. So they may cause problems like drugs or gambling. Furthermore, early studying abroad causes economic problems in our homes and our country. Therefore I don't agree with most early studying abroad.
