My Best Friend: My Mother

By Park Ji-Hee ("Alice")

She has had an important and positive influence on my life. Who is she? Just, my mother. She is not paid, but she is my unique supporter and adviser. My family includes my father, mother, younger sister and me. I'm the oldest daughter. I resemble my mother more than my father, for example, in appearance, character, and so on. She is short and has white skin and big, beautiful eyes. My nose resembles hers. If someone put each member of our family in different places, we could find each other easily because the appearance of our noses is the same. She considers details and likes to clean rooms and make people feel cheerful. So, if I don't clean my room everyday, she scolds me badly.
"Ji-Hee! Clean your room. How dirty your room is."
    "Yes, Mom," I say feebly.
My mother likes music and she is a good singer. I like music, too. Several years ago, we liked to go to the a songroom, but these days I am busy so I am sorry that we do not have many chances to go there. She likes to see movies, especially Chinese movies. I like movies; however, I don't like that kind of movie, so that makes a problem between my mother and me.
When I was a baby, she gave some milk, clothes and love to me. It means she was just my mother then, but now, we're friends. When I was a middle school student, my mother gave me my first advice. The problem was my future. I had to make a decision between a commercial high school or a general high school. My mother taught me to find my way by myself.
"What do you want to do?"
    "Umm....," I murmured.
    "What do you like?"
    "I don't know yet," I said sadly.
    "What's your dream?"
"When I grow up, what will I be?" I asked myself.
"Mom, I'm interested in English and I like to teach people," I said with a smile.
"Do you like to teach? Right! You like children."
"When I grow up, I'll be an English teacher," I said with courage.
"Great! Your students will like you and you will like them, too." She gave me self-confidence. So until now, my dream has been to become an English teacher. Since that I was middle school student, I've told my mother all of my secrets and problems. For example, I told her about my school life, dormitory life, boyfriend and so on. My character is a little hasty, negative and frank. So, when I was a high school student, sometimes I had a little trouble with my clasmates. One day, I don't remember the exact date, but anyway, the day was cleaning day. We had to clean our classroom. One of my classmates and I were supposed to clean two windows, but she didn't help me. So, I felt angry with her, and loud words led to hard blows. After school, I told my mother about this experience.
"It's your fault," she said positively.
    "Why, mom!"
"Fighting is bad. Use prudence in whatever you do."
The next day, I apologized to my classmate and told her that I was in the wrong. My mother has taught me carefulness and to have a generous attitude. Sometimes, I drink with my mother. She especially likes 'soju'. Now, my mother doesn't have much money. So, she works in a restaurant from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. It makes my heart ache to see my mother. She told me her problem. I can't settle to it, but at least I can keep her company. I try to help her. In fact, I have three part time jobs: I work as a secretary in the Social Education Department at Daejin University; second, I'm tutoring two middle school students; finally, I'm the chief of the number four dormitory.
My mother gave me my life and love, and she is my unique supporter and adviser. She taught me to have a warm mind. I will honestly study hard all my life, and I will continue to have a part-time job. Absolutely! I love my best friend who is my mother, and I wish my mother good health.
