Midterm Exam Review

Based on what you read in Chapter 6 of Lightbown & Spada (1993) and our class discussions, how would you respond to students who make the following statements?

  1. "Please correct every mistake I make as soon as I make it. I think that's the best way for me to improve my speaking ability quickly."
  2. "The reason I can't speak English well is because I didn't learn enough grammar. During my next vacation, I'm going to study my middle school and high school textbooks again and memorize all of the rules in order."
  3. "Please speak very slowly and use only words that I already know so I can understand every word. I think that's the best way for me to improve my listening ability."
  4. "I don't think I'm very intelligent. I've never been very good at memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary. I guess that's why I can't speak English very well."
  5. "I don't want to talk to other students in small group activities because they can't correct my mistakes. I think I can learn more if I just listen to a teacher lecture."
  6. "I know I'll never become fluent in English because I didn't have a chance to study it when I was a child."
