How My Father Helps Me

By Kim Hye-Seon ("Sandra")

Everybody admires somebody. That person could be a famous movie star, a great writer, or even a normal person. I admire a lot of people for many reasons, but I admire my father most.
My father is a kind, generous, warm-hearted man. He always remembers my birthday and special anniversaries, gives me presents, and sometimes cooks breakfast for me. When I am sick, he takes care of me. He is also a good husband and helps my mother with housework. Moreover, he is kind to strangers, orphans, and poor people. He visits the orphanage at Paju once a month and gives money to poor people because his family was poor and he saw a lot of suffering in the Korean War.
In addition, my father understands me very well. He has had many experiences, so when I am confused or have a problem, he gives me good advice and shows me the right way as a good father. He was helpful when I was deciding what to major in and supports my interest in English. He also guides me as I plan for my future life and career. He wants me to be more than just a secretary in an office, so he gives me helpful information about jobs. "Try to get a job where you can use your ability and fulfill your potential," he always suggests. "English is the ticket to a good job these days." I think it is good advice.
My father also has a lot of knowledge and is a good teacher. He teaches me about politics, society, old movies, economics, etc. For example, after we watch a movie, we discuss it. We particularly enjoy talking about classic movies like Casa Blanca, The Godfather, and The Magnificent Seven. He admires the old great actors such as Rock Hudson, Humphrey Bogart, and John Wayne because he thinks the quality of the acting was much better than acting these days. In general, we agree that movies (especially Hollywood movies) were better when he was my age than they are today. These discussions have helped me learn about the history of American movies. We also talk about serious social problems that we read about in the newspapers. At this time, for example, we are both concerned about who will be elected in the next presidential election.
Thus, my father is kind, understanding, and a good teacher. I can rely on him in any situation. When I have children, he will be a model for me in child-raising. For these reasons, I greatly admire my father.
