Park Chan-ho was an unknown amateur baseball player when he was at Han-Yang
University in 1994. Nobody knew his possibilities to be a great pitcher
at that time. But someone in the L.A. Dodgers found him when he was playing
baseball with another team from America. He began to have interest in his
powerful pitching and decided to draft him to the L.A. Dodgers. His plan
came true in 1994, and finally Park was drafted to the team of which he
had dreamed. Now he is a great pitcher for the L.A. Dodgers and a national
hero in Korea. There are several reasons that we see his as a national
hero.
First, Park has developed his abilities as a pitcher and a Korean man.
Most of all, he has a very fast ball, and he throws various kinds of pitches
over 150 kilometers per hour. He did his best to increase his ability,
so we think of him as a great man for his effort.
Second, he has good manners to his fans and umpires. When he starts his
games, he always shows his modesty to the umpires and never argues about
the umpires' decisions and obeys their commands. After the game, when he
has an interview, he always talks about his game with a smiling face and
earnest mind.
Third, he has adjusted well to American society. He didn't speak English
well at first when he arrived in America and seemed to feel a little strange.
But he studied English hard and tried to be friends with his teammates.
Now his is liked by them speaks English well. There is another pitcher
named Nomo Hedeo from Japan on his team. Nomo failed to adjust to American
society. Though he came to the L.A. Dodgers two years earlier than Park,
he doesn't know English well and has few friends. But Park has succeeded
in adjusting.
Finally, Park never boasts about himself even though his is now surrounded
by many people who admire, like, and love him. These characteristics make
us like him. He has accomplished his greatest wish through his efforts
and his support, and everyone in Korea wishes that he will be able to continue
his effort and never fail.
