A Symbol of Human Victory

I like music. Especially, I like rock music. It is good for removing stress. So many rock music bands are created and disappear every day. People who perform rock music have their dreams. They are working for an invisible aim only to be recognized for their music by other people.  Randy Rhoads was a guitarist among many musicians. He had a small body and was short, different from other rock musicians. His face was egg shaped and seemed pure, and he couldn't walk normally. But he took part in a rock band and succeeded. Rock music requires not only musical talent but also playing appearance. It is very dynamic, but Randy couldn't perform dynamically. He played the guitar standing only in one place during live concerts. In spite of that, people loved him. Specifically they loved his spirit of human victory, which he displayed in his performance.
Randy Rhoads was born in California in 1956. His mother was a musician who played the flute, so he could be in contact with music naturally from his childhood. Unfortunately, he couldn't walk like other children because of infantile paralysis. Because of it, his character became introspective. He played a guitar in his room when other children of the same age played outside. His only friend was music during his childhood. In 1979, he took part in an audition to choose a guitarist for the Ozzy Osbourne Band. It changed his life. There was a famous anecdote about this audition. Most of the people who participated in the audition took high-quality and expensive musical instruments, but Randy took an old guitar and amplifier. Ozzy Osbourne, the lead singer for the Ozzy Osbourne Band, saw Randy Rhoads who was tuning his guitar. Ozzy said, "I choose you." Ozzy was satisfied with Randy's simplicity and purity. Ozzy had a bad image like a devil because of his stage manners; for example, he made up like a devil and sang about devils. On the contrary, Randy had the image of an angel. This was because of his appearance. There was no wickedness in his face. Finally, Ozzy Osbourne's first album was recorded and gained in public favor so Randy also attracted public attention, and people found out he was a disabled man.
I first heard him perform when I was in the second grade of high school. At that time I was used to listening to just the melody of songs, because I didn't know about music deeply. So I couldn't understand his music and wasn't concerned about his face, age, height and so on. But as time went by, I listened to his music deeply and was fascinated by his performances. I can't express it in words, but there was something different about him from other musicians. I was impressed by his spirit of challenge more strongly than his success. It was very beautiful that he endeavored to realize his dream to be the world's best guitarist, in spite of the fact that he was a disabled man.
I thought about myself again, watching Randy. I have a dream, too. I want to be a simultaneous interpreter, so I want to study in America. But I hesitated to go there because of money and anxiety about life in America. When Randy took part in that famous audition, everyone thought it was impossible except Randy. I have to learn such bravery, but I know it will not be easy.
Sometimes we can see successful people who have overcome their difficulties. We usually see not their efforts but only their success. I think the important things are effort and confidence when we are trying to do something. I was taught effort and confidence by Randy Rhoads. It is difficult for someone's dreams to come true, but I think there is nothing impossible. When I intend to do something that seems to be hard, I think that I can do everything because I have everything including arms, hands, legs and parents. Randy died in an airplane accident when he was twenty-six years old. He went to heaven, but I'll never forget his spirit forever.
