Recently, there are many young entertainers in Korea. They are students
in the same condition as other common students. In Korea, high school students
study hard for entering the university they want to go to. And after finishing
the three year course of high school, they take the test for entering a
university. In Korea, it is very important to go to a good university,
especially one located in Seoul. So students study hard.
But these days, one problem has occurred. It is the special case of entertainers
entering universities. Entertainers can apply for any university and choose
any major only because they are famous entertainers. The original purpose
of the special case of entering was developing their special ability. The
system also was for farm and small town students. Farm and rural students
are often behind the city students in their studies. So Seoul's universities
accept smart farm students as special cases. This case affords an opportunity
of university life in Seoul to farm students. But the purpose has changed.
Now young Korean popular entertainers choose majors which are not related
to their talents. For example, they just hope to graduate from a
famous college with any major. It's wrong. Even though other students really
study hard, they can't enter the university and major they want. If one
entertainer passes the test, another common student must fail the test.
Therefore, such cases do damage to common students. It is the first problem.
Also, universities accept young entertainers just for advertising. Now
universities are waging a pitched battle to snatch up the most popular
stars. A university's purpose is learning. But now, what are universities?
Stars, as we call them, can enter a great college even though they don't
study hard.
But there is a more serious problem than that. It is that entertainers
are absent from school very frequently. The only reason is that they are
busy. They don't study hard, but they only work. Though they are absent
from school, they can receive normal grades. Otherwise, common students
get low grades compared with entertainers. A few days ago, I watched a
television news program dealing with this problem. This isn't always true,
but these days, this case is common. Just last year, singer Kim Yu-jin
of the pop group S.E.S., for instance, was accepted into Korea University.
She has reportedly missed half her classes. A Korea University student
said,"The college of music isn't our college. So I don't understand how
she was accepted into our college. She is just a singer." The student complained.
I think the most important problem is entertainers only have a name of
a great university. As a result, such a system is necessary, because the
original purpose is good. Korea's students take the same test for entering
university. There isn't a distinction. Special entrance helps talented
students to develop their special abilities. Besides smart and competent
farm students get a chance to study in the city. But the original purpose
has to be maintained. I hope that the system bolsters students' special
talents.
