Hello! Everyone. My name is Jeong Dah Un. I'm a sophomore in the Department
of English Language and Literature at Daejin University. Nice to meet you!
I want to give you some information about a woman named Agatha Christie.
In fact, I had no idea about mystery novels. So at first I read them just
for fun. But when I started to read Agatha Christie's mystery novels, I
was very impressed with her tricks. There were lots of tricks and mysteries.
So I couldn't help being charmed. Since then, I have read many of her mystery
novel series. Ok... I'll talk about one story among her mystery novels.
Eight women and men are invited to a desert island by an unknown person.
So they go to the desert island. However, the person who invited
them isn't there, but a servant man and his wife are waiting for them.
After that, they begin to die in order. As one person dies, one Indian
doll also disappears. Finally, ten people are dead. Yes... there
were none. Who is the killer? Or was there no killer? Try to guess!
Now, I'll talk about who Agatha Christie was and her three famous mystery
novels. First, who was she? She was born in 1891 in Tocay, Deven State,
in England. At that time, her name was Agatha Mary Clarina Miller.
She was interested in reading mystery novels that were written by Conan
Doyle, Jane Austin, and Charles Dickens. So, I think maybe she started
to write mystery novels because of that. Anyway, she wrote a lot of mystery
novels. So she was called "Queen of Crime," "First Lady of Mystery Novels,"
and "Queen of Mystery Novels." But can you image how popular she was at
that time? She was so great at that time that she was awarded a DBE prize
from Queen Elizabeth. DBE means "Dame Commander of the British Empire."
So it was very surprising. Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories,
was knighted, but he got the prize not for his mystery novels but for something
else. Agatha Christie continued to write mystery novels until she died
in 1976. So she became very famous and a great mystery novelist!
Second, I'd like to tell you about Agatha Christie's three famous mystery
novels. Before she died, she wrote sixty-six long novels and twenty short
novels. For example, she wrote The Ten Little Indians, Murder
on the Orient Express, "The Mousetrap," Curtain, The ABC
Murders, and so on. Among them, I'll talk about The Ten Little Indians,
"The Mousetrap," and Curtain. Can you remember one story that I
told you at first? The story was The Ten Little Indians. The original
title was And Then There Were None. Personally, I think this title
is better than The Ten Little Indians. This novel has a quite different
form from other mystery novels. So it is very exiting, and most people
know about it. Next, "The Mousetrap" was written for Queen Elizabeth, because
she wanted an Agatha Christie mystery novel as her birthday gift. Also,
"The Mousetrap" made was into a play. Finally, Curtain is another
one of Agatha Christie's mystery novels. Curtain created a sensation
in 1975! The reason is, Powaro, who is one of the characters, died in Curtain.
Even The New York Times carried an article about Powaro's death
on the first page. The article's title was "Famous Belgian Elecule Powaro
Dying."
So far, are you with me? I've talked about Agatha Christie and three of
her famous mystery novels. If you read Agatha Christie's mystery novels,
you'll notice how skillful her tricks are. Me? I already know about it.
It surprised me and made me admire her very much. I can't explain about
her novels. But if you read her mystery novels, you can understand what
I'm talking about. As Agatha Christie continued to write mystery novels
for fifty-six years, she gained a great honor as a mystery novelist. I
think that her greatest honor was having a lot of devoted readers all over
the world, rather than just reputation or money. So she was the most famous
mystery novelist in the world when she was alive, and she's still the most
famous. Ok... I hope that my speech has helped you to know more about Agatha
Christie and three of her famous mystery novels? Thank you for listening!
