A Critique of "Euthanasia and Physician-assisted Suicide"

We are God's creatures. He gave us the blessing of living, and he is the only one who can take it away. These days, people are ignoring this fact and trying to give the permission to doctors to end patients' lives under some certain conditions. This is what is called euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide (PAS).
According to David K. Gittelman, in his article "Euthanasia and Physician Assisted Suicide," euthanasia has been defined as "acts that result in a person's death so as to relieve pain and suffering" (p. 369). The author mentioned four types of euthanasia, which are indirect or passive euthanasia, direct or active euthanasia, voluntary euthanasia, and involuntary euthanasia. Each one of these types has its own process and purposes. Gittelman argues that the number of people who are in favor of euthanasia is increasing steadily. People who are in favor of euthanasia have different reasons for that. Some ill people choose Euthanasia because they think that they are "becoming a burden on their family." Others choose it because "they don't want to live in pain, to be dependent on life support machines" (p. 369). The author also discusses how peoples' perspectives and way of looking at life affect people and their desire for death. In addition, he says that ethical and legal considerations should be taken into consideration when using euthanasia.
In his article, Gittelman was successful in making his purpose for writing clear and obvious to the readers. He was able to provide the readers with the most important information that can give them a complete clear image about the euthanasia issue. For that, this article is considered to be a successful informative article. The author presented his information in excellent sequence that attracts readers to know more about the subject of euthanasia and makes them guess what the coming information is before reading it. The information in this article is accurate, and the author supported his information by giving statistics that are related to the euthanasia issue. The information in this article is also significant in that it makes readers think logically about euthanasia and build their own opinions about this issue by having a clear image about it. The terms were defined clearly and the article was easy to understand. The author, in his article, also used some emotionally loaded terms such as "burden." This term makes the readers sympathize with the patients and realize how bad they make these patients feel when they think that they are "becoming a burden on their family." In addition, the author of this article argued logically and gave some reasons of why some people desire euthanasia. Overall, the article was well organized and clearly written.
The important questions concerning this issue are the following: Should doctors be able to help people kill themselves? Do we have to help ill people to die if they want to? I think that euthanasia should not be allowed. As I see it, a human being is not a machine that, when it is paralyzed, we can just get rid of. God gives us the blessing of living, and we have to take care of our lives. No one has the right to end his or her life for any reason. People should always have the hope that the bad circumstances they are living in will disappear one day without thinking of ending their life. People should be strong enough to face all their problems, not to escape from them. Doctors must not have permission to use euthanasia or PAS. They must always do their best and whatever they can to save patients' lives. Moreover, most religions are against euthanasia and PAS. Many faith groups within Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and other religions believe that life is a gift from God. Thus, in my opinion, only God can start a life, and only God should be allowed to end one.
In conclusion, God gives life and therefore only God should take it away, so I believe that we are obliged to accept life as it is and preserve it for his honor. Because of that, I believe that we always have to be against euthanasia and PAS. Also, if we take reasons mentioned earlier into consideration, then we have to keep euthanasia and PAS illegal in all circumstances. The information in this article is fairly used and it discusses the most important points concerning the issue of euthanasia such as the definition of euthanasia, the different types of euthanasia, and some reasons of why some people desire euthanasia. The author was successful in giving the readers a good knowledge about euthanasia, which is considered nowadays a very important issue all around the world.
