Don't Be Afraid of Failing

By Lee, Hyun Kyung ("Claire")

What is the most effective way to learn another language? This is the basic question which we always have when we learn another language. Because people know it's difficult to learn another language, they want to find an easy way to learn it. Also they want to master it all at once without any failure. Indeed, what is the answer to this question?
We have learned English since we were middle school students. When we were elementary school students, we touched English. But it was only memorizing the alphabet for using computers. When I was a middle school student, I had more subjects. There were many subjects which I never had when I was an elementary school student. I was interested in the new subjects. Especially English was interesting for me, because in English textbooks, there were so many pictures different from others which just had letters.
Before I graduated from high school, I met many English teachers. But I can remember only two teachers, because they were so special. One teacher was my first English teacher when I was in the first grade of middle school. He was a young man, so he was very popular. Every girl, including me, liked him. Some of us gave him letters and presents, and we always tried to study English hard, because we thought, if we got good marks, he would like us more. Some of us even tried to write letters to him in English. So students in his English class always had better marks than other English teachers' classes. When we had our first class, he came and said, "Think about it. There are so many languages in the world. And now we'll challenge one of them. How wonderful it is." At that time, I was really impressed, and I wanted to do that with him. Also his lesson was enough to charm us. Many English teachers only taught grammar and vocabulary, but he was so different. He taught English songs, cartoons and fun stories. We always looked forward to his class and we studied hard.
Another teacher I remember well was my high school English teacher. She was concerned about all students who learned from her, She also remembered her students' names. For example, one day one of her students cut her hair. This is what she said: "You look so pretty. You can make your hair good, so you can make your head good, too." She always made us study hard, and encouraged us to do that. She tried to make us understand well, and we could feel she always tried her best for us. She also tried to be close to us. She cleaned with us and spent much time with us. We talked about many personal things with her, and she asked us many questions like these: "What is the most difficult thing about studying English? Which way is best for you? Do you have anything to tell me?" Her effort made us study hard.
There is an opposite example. When I was a high school student, I started learning French. At that time I was interested in other languages, so I was very happy because I could study another language. But my first French teacher didn't make me happy. He always gave us too much homework. We just had to memorize French words. I thought he taught French only because of school tests. He read the problems, and then he told us the answers. He never gave us time to think about them. So I lost interest in French. I studied that language for three years, but  now I can't remember anything.
If I think about the good ways and things about studying another language based on my experiences, there are two sides. One side is the learning side, and the other side is the teaching side. On the learner side, the most important thing is interest. A learner always has to try to learn another language. A learner must practices again and again. For example, when I studied English conversation, I studied that alone. So I can speak English, but I can't listen well. After I realized that, I spent a lot of time listening to  English tapes. It helped me. So at that time, I realized to learn English needed much time. On the teacher side, teachers must always make students interested in the language. They have to show and tell new and interesting ways and things to their students. Also, they always must be concerned about their students. They always have to know what the problems are and who their students are,
We know to learn a language is very difficult. The first time to learn a language is always difficult. At that time we used so many ways to learn. There are so many ways to learn another language. We know many things, but there are more things which we don't know. We can choose some of them, and then we can succeed or fail because of that. There are no perfect ways. After we experiment with many ways, then we can find good ways for each of us. While we use those ways, we may have many failures. But we should keep in mind, the failures are the key to find successful ways.
