A Cow

By Lee Hyang Ji

Translated by Rodney E. Tyson & Hong Eun-Taek

Poem Gate. July 19, 2002.

A cow died while it was tied to a stake

In swelling muddy water she swam straight forward and died

The water drained away and people with their trousers rolled up went to pull out the dead cow

Around the cow there was a deep ditch dug like a moat surrounding an ancient castle

The cow had dug a deep river in the water which she tried to swim across

Only then did the people find a ditch had been dug in their hearts as well
