Korean-American Couple Wins Short Story Prize

        Rodney E. Tyson, an American-born professor at Daejin University in Pochon, Kyonggi-do, and his Korean wife Mira Choi Tyson have been chosen as the winners of the top prize in the short story division of the 28th annual Modern Translation Awards jointly sponsored by The Korea Times and Bankers Trust of Korea. They translated Jeon Kyeong-rin's "¿°¼Ò¸¦ ¸ð´Â ¿©ÀÚ" (A Woman and a Goat).
        Prof. Yom Syng-sup, who teaches German literature at Keimyung University in Taegu, has won the top honors in the poetry division with his translation of Paek Moo-san's "Áö¿Á¼± 2 - Á¶¼±¼Ò" (Galley of Hell 2 - A Shipyard).
        In the novel division, the jury--Brother Anthony of Sogang University and Prof. Kim Young-moo of Seoul National University--failed to select top or commendation prize winners.
        Prof. Tyson, a graduate of Kent State University, has lived, studied and taught in Korea for more than 10 years. Tyson, currently an assistant professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Daejin University, also has taught at the University of Arizona, Hong Ik University, and Ewha Woman's University.
        Mira Choi Tyson, a graduate of the Art College of Hong Ik University, received an M.F.A. in metalsmithing and jewelrymaking from the University of Arizona and has taught art courses at that university and at Jang An Junior College in Suwon.
        The short story division of the translation awards was established in 1970 to introduce Korean literature to the world and carries a cash prize of 3 million won. The poetry category has a purse of 1 million won. The date of the award-giving ceremony will be announced later.
        The prize-winning short story and poetry translation works are published in the special anniversary section and page 10, respectively, in today's edition of The Korea Times.
