Your second essay will involve some original field research related to one of the essays you have read for class. You will have to collect some data from interviews or surveys and describe the results in your essay. You will also have to include at least one reference in your essay and use APA format correctly. Your final essay must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words long. In addition to prewriting and peer editing, you will be required to hand in two drafts of this essay. Only the final draft will be graded, but I will consider the entire process in the final grade. Your first draft is due Monday, October 29. Choose one of these two assignments:

1. Write an essay based on an interview with one person (or interviews with two or three people) on a topic covered in one of the essays we have discussed in class. Adapt the guidelines for interviewing on pages 108-109.
2. Write an essay based on your own survey research on a topic covered in one of the essays we have discussed in class. (You should survey about 10-20 people.) Adapt the guidelines for constructing a questionnaire on pages 109-111.

• Do men and women have different definitions of "friendship"?
• Can men and women be "just" friends?
• Should boys be taught to be "masculine" and girls to be "feminine"”?
• Do women really trust their friends more than men do?
• What kinds of "intercultural communication stumbling blocks" do AUS students (or AUS students from a specific country) face?
• What kinds of stereotypes do students have about people from a certain country (or various countries)?
• How do students define the concept of "being late" or "being early" in different situations?
• How do students from different countries feel about the "pace of life" in the UAE compared to other countries?

• Write a one-paragraph "proposal" for your research essay. Answer these questions: What topic do you plan to write about? Will you use interviews or a survey? Who will you interview or survey? How many people will you interview or survey? What do you expect the results to be of your interviews or survey?
• Write at least three possible interview or survey questions that you might use in your research.

(I will ask you to hand these in, but they will not be graded. You can type or write neatly.)
